While the glue is drying, we will cut out and assemble the slanted roof sections. Repeat the following steps for all four pieces. Cut out a "house" shape (I'll have this in the template that I'l post). Mark a 5mm border on all sides except the bottom. At the base of the triangle, draw a horizontal line from side to side. 5mm above the horizontal line, draw another horizontal line. With the x-acto, follow all the lines and cut down to the bottom paper without cutting through it. Pull off the top paper and scrape out the form.
With each "house" piece, pick a corner for it to fit in and do a dry fit before gluing and taping it in place. You may need to do some trimming to get a good fit. As before, we'll come back and clean up any small gaps.
Prep each of the "house" shapes with tape on both vertical sides. This will hold the pieces tightly in place while the glue dries. Put a line of glue on the paper in the cut area (this is the area that will make contact with the building sides). Set each piece in place and push the tape down to hold the "house" to the sides. Be aware that the glue may run down onto the surface that the building is on.
While the glue is drying, cut the panels for the walls and roof. For three of the large square walls, cut three 17/8" x 1 3/4" rectangles out of thin cardboard. For the four short, wide walls cut a total of eight 1 1/4" x 1 1/8" rectangles. The cross for the roof is 1 3/4" on all sides.
Once the glue is dry, remove the tape. Next, we'll glue down the slanted roofs. Put a line of glue on the backside paper along the edges of all the triangular sides. When you push each into place, use tape to hold while the glue dries.
With all of these down, we'll put on the panels we cut earlier. The three large squares go on three of the "cross points." They should be centered horizontally and sit flush with the bottom of the wall. Put two of the smaller squares on each of the short, wide sides. Set them flush with the bottom with 1/8" space between them and on each end. The final panel to glue down is the cross on the roof. You'll want to wait until it's safe to pull off the tape that's holding down the slanted roofs. Center the cross on the roof. On all of these pieces, spread a thin layer of glue and make sure it covers all of the cardboard, especially the edges.
That's it for this post. Next time I'll show how I clean up gaps and give some options for a door. I'll also have the gameplay rules we use with the building and a PDF with these instructions and templates.
