I wanted to use the terrain (speeder and ork wrecks) that I just finished building and wanted to make it a part of the game narrative. So we picked out all of our battle-damaged terrain and set it up in an area 18 inches in from all the table edges. We marked off the boundaries with dice. This was described as a battle zone that still has land mines scattered throughout. If any part of a unit ends its move in this area, it must roll one die per squad to see if they stepped on a mine. On a roll of 6, the small blast template is placed on the unit (owning player's choice of placement) and all models underneath take a strength 3 hit.
Hunter, my Templar player, normally beats my GK, but has had difficulties playing against the new codex. That, along with Noah's heavy weapons on his Sons, made Hunter think alot about his strategy going into this game. We are playing annihilation. Templars deployed and went first. They immediately dropped their dread behind our lines and took out Noah's mmelta dread (ouch!). He was also forced to rethink his deployment by putting the missile termie squad out of the Land Raider in the first turn (not his normal strategy). He also took out one of our bikes.
In our turn, we mostly stayed back and waited. Noah did take his two remaining bikes after the LR for a quick slap with their melta bombs. His snipers also managed to pick off one of the termies.
It's funny how both sides avoided the battle zone. Strength 3 hits aren't much to be concerned about, but it does make you think alot about crossing that area.
We only got in the one turn (8 year olds have early bed times), so I'll throw more info up as we progress. The nice thing about having our own table at home is the ability to play games as we have time.
